28 oktober 2014 – World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) publicerar idag webbstandarden HTML5 som W3C Recommendation, den femte större revisionen av det format som används för att bygga webbsidor och tillämpningar, och som är en hörnsten i den öppna webbplattformen. För tillämpningsbyggare och näringslivet i stort ger HTML5 en uppsättning funktionalitet som människor nu kan tryggt använda under kommande år. Stöd för HTML5 finns nu på en stor mängd apparater, vilket sänker kostnaden för att skapa rika tillämpningar som kan utnyttjas av användare överallt.
”Idag tar vi bara för givet att vi kan ta del av video och audio direkt i en webbläsare, och att vi kan köra en webbläsare i en telefon” säger Tim Berners-Lee, W3C:s direktor. ”Vi förväntar oss att vi kan dela med oss av foton, handla på nätet, läsa nyheter, och hitta alla typer av information, på alla typer av apparater. De flesta användare är inte medvetna om att de använder HTML5 och den öppna webbplattformen, men det är dessa teknologier som underbygger användarnas ständigt växande förväntningar.”
Med HTML5 kan man använda video och audio på webben utan att behöva insticksprogram; program får tillgång till ett flexibelt ritbräde som används för att visa grafik, visuella spel och andra visualiseringar som skapas för stunden; direkt stöd för skalbar vektorgrafik (SVG) och matematisk notation (MathML); annoteringar som krävs vid typografi för östasiatiska språk (Ruby); funktionalitet som gör rika tillämpningar tillgängliga för användare med funktionshinder; och mycket mera.
HTML5 har faktiskt använts i flera år. Enligt 2014 Vision Mobile Survey använder 42% av 10 000 utfrågade utvecklare en kombination av HTML, CSS och JavaScript för hela (eller delar av) tillämpningar på mobiltelefoner. Gartner identifierade HTML5 som en av deras topp-tio mobila teknologier och funktionaliteter för åren 2015 och 2016, och säger att HTML ”kommer att bli en oerhört viktig teknologi för de organisationer som levererar tillämpningar för olika plattformar.”
För att kunna uppnå det för HTML5 och den öppna webbplattformens utlovade målet ”bygg en gång, använd överallt” så har -- under de 22 månader som gått sedan W3C annonserade att HTML5:s specifikation blivit funktionellt fullbordad -- deltagare i W3C:s intressegemenskap bidragit till testsviten för HTML5, som nu innehåller fler än 100 000 tester, och som fortsätter att utökas. Initiativet Test the Web Forward, drivet av intressenter, har en viktig och fortsatt roll i att stärka interoperabiliteten i den öppna webbplattformen.
I och med dagens offentliggörande av HTML5-standarden, så kan programvaruutvecklare dra nytta av löften om avgiftsfria licenser från fler än 60 företag, i enlighet med W3C:s patentpolicy. Det är viktigt att utvecklare kan använda webbteknologi utan att erlägga royaltyavgifter, inte minst för att webben skall vara en plattform som stöder innovation.
Fastän HTML5 är brett använd, och populär hos utvecklare, så behöver vi göra mer för att nå fram till målet att den öppna webbplattformen skall sänka kostnaderna för att utveckla kraftfulla tillämpningar som kan köras på många plattformar. I ett blogginlägg i oktober 2014 säger Jeff Jaffe (VD på W3C) att ”nu när HTML5 är klar så bör W3C göra mer för att stärka de delar av den öppna webbplattformen som utvecklare har akut behov av.” För att dra igång dialog och driva fram enighet kring dessa prioriteter ger Jaffe en lista över de ”tillämpningsgrundvalar” som måste stärkas för att skapa nästa generations plattform.
W3C kommer att föra en dialog om detta ramverk, och hur det påverkar W3C:s arbeten, på sitt årliga möte med medlemmar (TPAC) senare denna månad.
Starkare grundvalar kommer även att göra det lättare att införa ny funktionalitet i webben, sådant som föreslås dagligen, såväl inom som utanför W3C. W3C expanderar för att kunna ta hand om användningsfall från sektorer som nätbetalningar, fordon, digital publicering, telekommunikation, och underhållningsindustrin. Samtidigt förfinar 4 500 ingenjörer nya idéer för webben, i fler än 180 Intresse- och affärsområdesgrupper.
W3C tackar främst Ian Hickson (Google), den främste arkitekten för HTML5-specifikationen, och som har gett viktiga bidrag till HTML-språket.
Sedan tackar W3C de som arbetat som ordförande i arbetsgruppen för HTML – Paul Cotton (Microsoft), Sam Ruby (IBM), och Maciej Stachowiak (Apple) – för deras ledande roll i arbetet fram till att HTML5 blivit webbstandard; samt tack till hela arbetsgruppen för HTML för alla bidrag.
W3C tackar även:

It's good to see HTML5 reach the Recommendation stage. We were one of the first organizations involved in HTML5 because we believe in continuing to evolve the open Web platform to support innovation and help users. HTML5 is a great leap forward for an accessible web. In HTML5, accessibility is a core design principle. For the first time the semantics of HTML have been mapped, and implementation requirements defined in terms of the way HTML semantics are conveyed to people using assistive technologies. The addition of new interactive controls, native video and captioning, and new structural elements in HTML5, make it easier than ever for developers to create HTML interfaces that are usable by everyone.
