Summary:

Standards are the result of collaborative efforts by stakeholders to establish some common denominator in some area where technology is deployed. What is it that standards should achieve? How is a standard created? And what characterises a standard?

There are different dimensions of benefits that a standard should enable. Different kinds of benefits for different types of stakeholders. Stakeholders can try to shape the standardisation process so that their own benefits are maximized, to the detriment of possible other impacted parties. Can we look at a standard and judge it to be good or not-so-good?
